I can’t recall exactly what came first, the chicken or the egg, but I do know I was perusing some ancient files when I ran across a coil of segments. Shaped like a mechanized snake-like beast, it looked - well, just like the attached illustration.

The Idea here is that the creature is hollow and fixed in shape. With an ocarina styled reed in the mouth opening and some finger holes along it’s hollow length, we have an instrument! The possibilities filled my mind. More to follow.

I got to thinking about the segmented nature of the design and soon the notion arrived that it would be cool to make the thing more lively, more wyrm like in motion and in sound. So After some experimentation I developed the attached design images and the 3D printing code thad creates them.

The mouthpiece is from another 3D printing artist. It's called a ripple and is available here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:363720

The idea here is that air escapes from the seams of the creature. If you hold it straight you get a particular note. Then as you curve the object you get different notes. In an ocarina your tone is proportional to the area of the escaped vents, so the more you twist the deeper a sound you get (or so I imagine).

I have not 3D printed this one yet. Many thanks to mikaelfernstrom for the use of the fipple design.

nice idea Very Happy

Might be a bit diffult to play without having tentacles though Laughing
If you add some small loops/rings on one side of all the elements and thread a string through it,
then do the same on the other side but use something elastic, it might be possible to change
the shape by pulling the string. Of course it would just bend in one direction and probably not in
a gradual way. So some elements might 'bend' easier than others. hmm How about adding some
small servos

I/quote]

Yeah, so I think it's best to go back to a fixed shape with holes in it. I'll post again when I get there.
