and now for the plug.... |

My friend Scott is holding a festival of Sci-Fi films at the Brummie IMAX theatre including;
1. The forbidden Planet
2. 2001 a Space odyssey
3. Alien
....and 2 more films that I've spaced on the names of
I met a couple of years back the neice of Bebe Barron. I am trying to get hold of Bebe to see if she will do a lecture- its a long call but worth it
The Forbidden Planet and 2001, although not IMAX films, are brand new prints- so the quality should be stunning.
I'll keep you posted on the dates. Meanwhile, here's the Birmingham ThinkTank link;

forbidden Planet is a great film with a great score. Meeting Bebe would be a great privilege indeed. Wow... _________________ --Howard

Yes, those IMAX Dome's kick the crap out of the Giant IMAX 2-D projections. I always liked when Leonard Nemoy introduces the sound system, and the screens get lit up from behind to reveal 13,000 W of speakers located *everywhere*. |

Cheers- you get the general idea- it's the photojournalist in me. I thought it was gonna be quite hi-tech, but it was a bit of an anticl-imax. wa wa wa...... :)
They're building a Planetarium Dome above this theatre and the Zeiss Projector is being fitted as we speak.
I loved the Planetarium that was in Vancouver, BC (where I used to live many moons ago)- it looked like the Forbidden Planet from the outside :D ((anyone know if it's still there?)
I also visited a Planetarium in Colombo, Sri Lanka- to my horror the dome was all falling apart and we were locked in this great dome sitting on wooden seats- very uncomfortable. Such a contrast to the sci-fi Canadian one! |

Apparently IMAX film very similar to the size of CinemaScope- (70mm?) which 2001 was filmed in incidently.
The IMAX projector can be modified to take CinemaScope too
But yes- it completely blows your mind- especially the 3D, but I almost threw-up on one of the safari documentaries.
I can't wait until someone does something really special with the IMAX medium. But I don't envy the crew who are dragging that camera about! |

Unfortunately, I don't think things will get really interesting until IMAX goes digital, so the cameras become manageable.
At the pace that technology is moving, and the pace homes are being fitted with home thaters, it's a nice prospect that I might have a personal IMAX dome that fits in my pocket before age gets the best of me. Maybe they'd call it...."iMax". |

I don't think it's going to happen for a while- as the technology is far too expensive :( |

I like the Forbidden Planet, and 2001 is probably my favourite film.
We've got an IMAX in Brizzle. You guys fancy popping down? _________________ This message was brought to you from Beyond The Grave. |

One time in the early 80s I was on a job interview at General Dynamics in San Diego. The guy interviewing me said he saw my background in electronic music and thought I'd enjoy seeing what goes on down there. Turns out, he was the inventor of the Imax projection and sound systems. He took me on a tour of the San Diego Imax theater. It was pretty interesting. This guy also was a member of the team that designed the Atlas rocket. He said the most significant things he's invented are secret. He was a really nice guy. It kind of ruined my image of evil scientists and engineers that work on weapons systems. Turns out, some of them are all right people, and artists at that. _________________ --Howard

You wouldn't happen to know my cousin Adam, would you?
How weird is it, that my cousin lives in Birmingham, AL, USA, and also works on IMAX theatres? He has traveled to other countries for work, so you never know...
Also - I am originally from Richmond, VA. The science museum has an IMAX theatre there, and they designed the theatre entrances and exits in such a way so you could look in and see the projection room while you were waiting! |
